High-Protein Chocolate Mousse

Ingredients List

  • 1 ½ cups plain Greek yogurt (2% or 5% fat is recommended for creaminess)
  • 1 cup dark chocolate chips (70%+ cocoa is best)
  • ⅓ cup cacao powder (sifted)

Instructions

Step 1 — Melt the Chocolate

Begin by melting the dark chocolate chips. You can do this in the microwave in 20-30 second intervals, stirring between each, or you can melt it using a double boiler. Be sure that the melted chocolate is not too hot when mixing it with the yogurt.


Step 2 — Combine Ingredients

In a stand mixer or using a hand mixer, combine:

  • 1 ½ cups plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 cup melted dark chocolate
  • ⅓ cup sifted cacao powder

Whisk the mixture on medium-high speed until it is fully combined and smooth. The texture should be thick and creamy, with the chocolate and yogurt fully incorporated.


Step 3 — Spoon and Set

Spoon the mousse into individual serving cups or a large bowl. This recipe can be served as individual portions or in one large dish, depending on your preference.


Step 4 — Refrigerate

Refrigerate the mousse for at least 2 hours to allow it to set. The chilling process will help the mousse firm up and develop its rich, creamy texture.

Step 5 — Serve and Enjoy

Once chilled, the mousse will be ready to serve. If desired, top with additional shaved chocolate, berries, or a sprinkle of cacao nibs for added texture and flavor.


Additional Notes

  • Sweetener Adjustments: If you’d like a sweeter mousse, you can add a tablespoon of honeymaple syrup, or a sugar substitute (like stevia) to the yogurt before mixing it with the melted chocolate.
  • Texture Tip: Make sure the melted chocolate is cool enough before mixing it with the yogurt to avoid curdling the yogurt.
  • Vegan Option: To make this dessert vegan, use dairy-free yogurt and vegan chocolate chips.

Variations

  • Berry Chocolate Mousse: Top with fresh berries like raspberries or strawberries for added color and flavor.
  • Nutty Chocolate Mousse: Add chopped almonds or hazelnuts to the mousse for extra crunch.
  • Mint Chocolate Mousse: Add a few drops of mint extract to the mixture for a refreshing mint-chocolate flavor.

Storage & Make-Ahead

  • Storage: Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
  • Make-Ahead: This mousse can be made up to 2 days in advance. It’s perfect for meal prep or entertaining, as it stores well and only gets creamier as it chills.
